Post-doctoral positions (2 years) in Cloud-Edge Computing

Prof. Paul Townend

Scientific Coordinator @ COGNIT 🇸🇪 Associate Professor @ Umeå University

July 26, 2023

The Department of Computing Science at Umeå University seeks up to two post-doctoral candidates who will work as part of the COGNIT Project investigating the application of AI-enabled scheduling to serverless cloud-edge systems. The employment is full-time for two years, starting on October 1, 2023, or by agreement. Submit your application before the end of July 30!

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The Department of Computing Science at Umeå University conducts world-leading research in several scientific fields and is growing rapidly. We are looking to recruit up to two Post Doctors to join the award-winning Autonomous Distributed Systems (ADS) Lab. The department has been growing rapidly in recent years where focus on an inclusive and bottom-up driven environment are key elements in our sustainable growth. Our workplace consists of a diverse group from different nationalities, background and fields. If you work as a Post Doctor with us you receive the benefits of support in career development, networking, administrative and technical support functions along with good employment conditions.

The ADS lab is an internationally renowned research group focusing on autonomous management of Cloud & Edge resources and applications to best support our increasingly digitized and connected society. The lab has developed international partnerships with companies including Google, IBM, Red Hat, and Ericsson, as well as universities and institutes such as Princeton University, Imperial College London, Lawrence Berkeley Lab, etc.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

We are looking for 1-2 post-doctors to join the new Horizon Europe funded project “SovereignEdge.COGNIT” (https://cognit.sovereignedge.eu/). COGNIT is a large-scale research project (6M Euros in funding) that involves ten organisations from across Europe with the aim of building an intelligent and automated platform for the cloud-edge continuum that intelligently supports efficient and adaptive serverless computation for a wide range of use cases.

COGNIT is addressing a number of unsolved challenges, many of them derived from constrained resource devices, infrastructure heterogeneity, and the need to meet criteria such as performance, resilience, security, data sovereignty, and energy efficiency. This involves making use of AI, automation, and portability to manage and adapt resources and workloads, and to respond in real time to possible incidents and security threats.

As part of the project, your responsibilities will include designing and developing a range of components, with an emphasis on an AI-enhanced orchestration engine that can efficiently monitor and make workload placement/reallocation decisions over a large scale Cloud-Edge system that aims to optimise for energy consumption, use of renewable energy, performance and latency objectives, pricing, etc.

You will work with other partner organisations (both academic and industrial) across Europe, attend project meetings in a range of countries, perform research and develop software components to support the project, and write research papers and attend conferences to publicise your contributions.
